What is Herpes?

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or infection that is caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2).  Most people who have it are asymptomatic carriers, which means they are carrying the disease without knowing it. A person can get herpes by sexual intercourse or sexual contact with someone who has the disease. Currently there is no cure for herpes but it can be treated to reduce symptoms and decrease the chance of transmission. According to CDC.gov, 776,000 people in the United States get new herpes infections every year. Transmission occurs more often from infected men to women than infected women to men.

Two types of herpes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 occurs usually at the mouth and face and for HSV-2, it usually occurs in the genital area.
